I use floating row covers for a lot of things when I'm gardening. 

In the spring I cover newly set out plants, newly seeded areas, and also when propagating by cuttings I place covers over them for some added shade and also to try and keep the varmints from disturbing them. 

One varmint I had was my rooster.  He likes to dig around for worms to feed his hen and loves anywhere fresh to dig.
